ROTHENBERG
HOUSE

Architect Shmuel Rozov built the Rutenberg House for Pinchas Rutenberg as part of the Rutenberg compound in Haifa. The interior of the house was originally made with glass and concrete in the modernist style of the 1970s. Within the context of that heritage, we have designed offices for Elia Engineering, a transportation engineering firm, in direct response to the spirit of the building.

The offices span 400 m² and preserve the original concrete columns, ceilings and wood-framed windows. We divided the different spaces using metal, glass and wood partitions supported by steel beams and posts. The main staircase became a truly unique feature of our design: the stairwell and original banister rail were preserved, decades-old terrazzo steps were overlaid with unfinished diamond-plate stainless steel, and landings and entryways were surfaced with varnished black steel tiles.
